About the project
With more than six thousand loyal fans, the Humans of Nelson is a beautiful, touching, funny, and inspiring collection of photographs and stories celebrating our individuality and capturing the spirit of Nelson, British Columbia.
Photographer Ryan Oakley takes to the streets of Nelson, asking strangers if he can take their picture. Sometimes a bit of their conversation ends up as a caption to the photo.
This is a spin-off of the popular Humans of New York.
Enjoy!

"What inspired you to create a presentation for TED?"
"I was working at Burning Man. And it was a gorgeous morning - and there was a good show going on. I remember looking over the crowd and something didn't seem quite right. Then I saw that people were forming these these little cliques - these little groups of people. They weren't TOGETHER. And somehow I felt they were missing the point. Burning Man is this progressive event. But I was seeing separation and not togetherness. So that day I decided I would look everyone in the eye and say 'Good morning' to them. Many people were shocked that a stranger would do that. But it brought togetherness. The Good Morning Initiative gets rid of the fear of the other."
