About the project
With more than six thousand loyal fans, the Humans of Nelson is a beautiful, touching, funny, and inspiring collection of photographs and stories celebrating our individuality and capturing the spirit of Nelson, British Columbia.
Photographer Ryan Oakley takes to the streets of Nelson, asking strangers if he can take their picture. Sometimes a bit of their conversation ends up as a caption to the photo.
This is a spin-off of the popular Humans of New York.
Enjoy!

Read MoreAs I was trying to get a shot of this dog, he (or she) was being quite fidgety and it was taking a bit time to get a good shot. Some lady must have seen my struggle - and she came over to help us out.
You don't see her, but she's just to the left of this frame.
She was talking to the dog and telling it to look my way - and telling me, 'There! That's the shot - take it!" but then my focus would go off and I couldn't take the shot.
She tried harder and harder and soon I would see her hands and arms wave in front of the lens to get the dogs attention. It felt like an impossible situation - I had to find a moment where the dog was looking at me, my focus was sharp, and the womans hands weren't in the frame.
I felt so much pressure to get a great shot for this woman. I hope she sees this post and approves.
And I want to thank her for her valiant effort to make it all work. If we all helped each other out with such intensity and passion, the world would be a better place. Thanks stranger....thanks.
