About the project
With more than six thousand loyal fans, the Humans of Nelson is a beautiful, touching, funny, and inspiring collection of photographs and stories celebrating our individuality and capturing the spirit of Nelson, British Columbia.
Photographer Ryan Oakley takes to the streets of Nelson, asking strangers if he can take their picture. Sometimes a bit of their conversation ends up as a caption to the photo.
This is a spin-off of the popular Humans of New York.
Enjoy!

Read More"I was the throw-back of my siblings. The black sheep. The only one to have fair skin and light hair. When I was little, maybe 6 or 7, I got a real bad sunburn. That's how I lost my ear. Skin cancer. See that tattoo on my ear of the four-leaf clover? I got that because my nickname was Irish. Even though my parents are from Hungary. That's how fair-skinned I was. People thought I was Irish. I also go by Billy the Kid. I don't use my last name. I was the bad one and when I left home I didn't want my actions to come back to my family."
He told me all of this in a very light-hearted manner. With little laughs between sentences. Don't let the black and white photo, the lost ear, or the quote mis-lead you. This was a very jolly fellow as far as I can tell.
